Frequently Asked Questions for Certification of Building Information Modelling (BIM) Coordinators

 

1. Who is the Certification of BIM Coordinators targeted at?

The Certification of BIM Coordinator is targeted at BIM practitioners who already have relevant practical experience in BIM projects, meet the relevant academic requirement and have completed a CIC-Accredited BIM Coordinator Course.

 

2. Am I eligible for Certification as a BIM Coordinator?

To be eligible for Certification as a BIM Coordinator, you must meet the following requirements:

 

a. Qualification – A diploma (or equivalent) in Qualifications Framework (QF) Level 4 or above qualification accredited or recognised by a CIC-recognised professional body[1] in architecture, engineering, surveying, building or construction, or equivalent, as recognised by CIC, plus proof of 3 years of full-time relevant work experience (with at least 6 months stationed in HK);

 

b. Has gained at least 1 year full-time relevant BIM experience in BIM projects, in latest five years (with at least 6 months stationed in Hong Kong), that able to demonstrate the applicant possessing the required levels of the Core Competencies as stipulated in the Certification of BIM Coordinators.

 

c. Successful completion of:

      1. BIM Coordinator course(s) accredited by CIC. (A grace period of one year is allowed before new applicants are required to submit a completion certificate of a CIC-Accredited BIM Coordinator Course in support of their applications. This grace period will end on 31 March 2021.) PLUS;
      2. at least one BIM software/platform training course in operation level as recognised by CIC, OR possession of any certification of BIM software in operation level issued by respective software developers.

d.  Client[2] and Employer[3] evaluation forms – submission of at least one set of evaluation forms from both client and employer sides. Standardised evaluation forms for client and employer sides will be provided by CIC. The applicant should ask his/her client and employer to fill in the standardised evaluation forms and return by the client and employer directly to CIC separately. The forms will be used to verify the applicant's BIM experience as stated in (b) and to evaluate the applicant's BIM capability obtained from the BIM experience stated in (b).

 

3. Can I apply for Certification of BIM Coordinators if I am self-employed or unemployed?

Yes, you can.

 

4.  I have 5 years of working experience in BIM, do I have to be certified as a BIM coordinator first before I can be certified as a BIM manager?

Apart from years of experience in BIM, there are other requirements such as possess of a construction-related degree for the certification of BIM manager. If you can fulfill all other requirements then you can consider applying for certification of BIM manager.

Frequently Asked Questions for The Construction Innovation and Technology Fund (CITF)

 

1.How can CITF subsidize my BIM learning? What is the funding amount?

Through the CITF funding scheme, you can:

    • Receive up to 70% course fee reimbursement
    • Get maximum HK$3,000 or 70% of the course fee per course (whichever is higher)
    • Accumulate up to HK$15,000 in training subsidies
      This means you can enroll in multiple courses until reaching the HK$15,000 subsidy cap.
      For example, for a HK$10,000 BIM course, you would only need to pay about HK$3,000.

 

2.Are my company and I eligible for CITF funding?

Eligibility requirements:

 

For Individuals:

    • Must be a Hong Kong permanent resident
    • Must have relevant background or experience

 

For Companies:

    • Must be registered in Hong Kong
    • Must be non-governmental and non-subsidized organizations
      The application process will be handled through your employer

 

3.How far in advance should I register for EVERBIM courses to apply for CITF funding?

You can apply and submit course CITF reference numbers at:

Registration timeframes:

    • Regular courses: at least 30 days in advance
    • Customized courses: at least 8 weeks in advance

 

Approval timeline:

    • Most of our courses are on the pre-approved list, requiring about 30 calendar days for approval
    • Non-pre-approved courses require 60 calendar days
      Therefore, we recommend choosing courses with CITF reference numbers for assured quality and faster approval.

 

4.How can I ensure my CITF funding application is successful?

To increase your chances of approval, you should:

    • Choose CITF-approved training courses
    • Communicate early with your employer to ensure timely submission
    • Prepare relevant background information and experience proof
    • Follow the application timeline and allow sufficient processing time
